Facial Implants
There are many different procedures involved in face lift surgeries, depending on each individual’s desired results. Face lifts can include deep plane lifts to feather lifts in conjunction with procedures to improve brows, eyelids, chin or neck. Face lifts are generally performed under general anesthesia and can take over 2 hours depending on the desired improvements performed. Almost any variation and extent of surgery depends on each individual’s desired outcome. Skin type, ethnic backgrounds, degree of skin elasticity, individual healing and basic bone structure are all factors that will effect the final outcome of facial surgery.
The Procedure
The procedure for a basic face lift starts with a small incision in the temple area on the hair line just above the ear. The incision will continue around the ear lobe, circling the ear and back to the point of origin at the scalp. The skin is pulled outward and then repositioned while tightening the underlying muscle and connective tissue. Some fat and skin may be removed during this process. The incision is made in a natural crease to help conceal any scarring. After trimming any excess skin the incision will be closed with thin sutures or metal clips. A face lift is often performed with a combination of mild sedatives, local anesthesia and a mild intravenous anesthesia. Some surgeons prefer to use general anesthesia. A dressing over the sutures will be applied to protect them.
Recuperation
Most patients experience mild pain after surgery. There will be swelling and bruising. Cold compresses will help reduce swelling. Dressings may be removed in 1-2 days. Your head will need to remain elevated while lying down and activity will be limited. In some cases a drainage tube may be inserted but can be removed in 1-2 days. Sutures and/or staples are usually removed within 5-10 days following surgery. Recovery usually takes 2-3 weeks but many patients go back to work in 2 weeks. Scars will fade with time. Some relaxation of tissue will occur after the first few weeks. Insurance does not generally cover surgery that is performed for cosmetic reasons. Surgery to correct or improve genetic deformations may be reimbursable in part or in whole.
