AKA: Rhinoplasty, Nose Job, Nose Reconstruction

Rhinoplasty is surgery performed to reshape the nose. This is the most common form of plastic surgery procedures. Nose surgery can increase or decrease the size of the nose, change the tip or reshape the bridge or alter the nostrils or the span between your nose and upper lip. Surgery can correct birth defects or injuries or help with breathing problems.

The Procedure

Many surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis. Local or general anesthesia may be used depending on the surgeon and complexity of the procedure. Surgery usually takes 1-2 hours. During surgery the skin of the nose will be separated from bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage is then reshaped. This procedure may be done with an incision inside the nose or an "open" procedure (outer skin) depending on the desired cosmetic changes and surgeon preference.

Recuperation

When the surgery is complete a splint will be applied to maintain the new shape. Nasal packs or plastic splints may be placed in your nostrils as well. Your face will be puffy and achy and you will have a dull headache. The first day requires bed rest with your head elevated. Swelling and bruising around the eyes will worsen in 2-3 days. Swelling and bruising may last 2 weeks. Cold compresses applied to the facial areas will relieve some discomfort. Some bleeding may occur in the first few days. You will be unable to blow your nose for the first week and you may feel stuffy for a couple of weeks. The nasal packs will be removed in a few days, but, the dressing and stitches will remain usually about 2 weeks. Most patients can return to work after a week. Strenuous exercise must be avoided for 2-3 weeks and you will be unable to place glasses on your nose for about 6-7 weeks. They can be propped on your cheeks or forehead until the nose is healed.
