Penile Implants
AKA: Penile Augmentation, Penile Prothesis, Penis Reconstruction
Penile implants are mechanical devices surgically inserted into the body to help an individual achieve and/or sustain an erection. This procedure is often covered by medical insurance. Complication risk is very low.
The Procedure
There are basically 2 types of penile implants:
- Inflatable Implants:
Inflatable implants consists of a pump that is placed in the scrotum, a saline reservoir and 2 cylinders that are placed within the erection chambers of the penis. The pumping of saline causes the erection chambers to fill to create an erection. The pump is used to remove the saline and deflate the penis as well.
- Malleable Implants:
These are 2 semi-rigid bendable rods placed in the erection chambers which can be manipulated to be bent or erect.
General procedure for either surgery:
An Urologist usually performs the surgery in a hospital. The average hospital stay is 3-7 days for this type of surgery. Prior to surgery blood and urine studies will be performed. There are 2 types of anesthesia used, spinal anesthesia by injection or general anesthesia.
Procedure for inflatable implants:
An incision is made on the top side of the penis. The penile tissue is stretched so placement of the prosthesis is possible. The fluid reservoir for the prosthesis is implanted under the skin at the base of the pelvis above the bladder. This prosthesis is inflated by applying pressure on this reservoir. The skin is then sutured.
Procedure for malleable implants:
An incision is made in the underside of the penis. The tissue surrounding the urethra gets expanded to allow placement of a rod implant on either side. The skin is then closed with sutures.
Recuperation
Hospital stay is 3-7days. Allow 4 weeks for a full recovery. After the incision heals you should feel no discomfort from the prophesies. Your doctor may prescribe pain medication and/or antibiotics. No driving 1 week after you arrive home and no vigorous exercise for 6 weeks. Your doctor will determine when sexual activity may be resumed. Warm compresses placed on the incision should help with some discomfort.
